1956 -

October 28
Elvis Presley makes his second appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show, where the host presents him with a Gold record for "Love Me Tender".

1958 -

October 28
Buddy Holly appeared on Dick Clark's American Bandstand, where he lip-synched "It's So Easy" and "Heartbeat". It would be Holly's last major TV appearance.

1961 -

October 28
It was on this day that Beatles manager Brian Epstein would later claim that a young British lad named Raymond Jones walked into his Liverpool record shop and asked for a song called "My Bonnie" by Tony Sheridan And The Beat Brothers, prompting him to track down the band and eventually sign them. Epstein's personal assistant, Alistair Taylor, would later say that he used the name of Jones (a regular customer) to order the single and paid the deposit himself, knowing that Epstein would notice it and order further copies.

Brian Epstein went to The Cavern Club to watch The Beatles' lunchtime show. He would later say that he was "overwhelmed by their talent", but in reality he had nothing to compare them to, as they were the first Pop group he had ever seen perform live. .

The Star Club in Hamburg, Germany was the site of a historic Rock and Roll get together when The Beatles and Little Richard appeared for a two week engagement.

1966 -

The British Musicians Union declares that they are against BBC Radio continuously broadcasting Pop music.

1967 -

October 28
Diana Ross And The Supremes' "Greatest Hits" started a five week run at #1 on the US album chart. Although original member Florence Ballard is pictured on the cover and sings on all the tracks, by the time the L.P. was released, she had been fired from the group and replaced by Cindy Birdsong.

1972 -

The United States Council for World Affairs announces that it is adopting "Join Together" by The Who as its official theme.

1977 -

October 28
Steve Perry makes his first concert appearance with Journey at the Old Waldorf in San Francisco. He would lead them to 17 Billboard Top 40 entries over the next ten years.

1978 -

October 28
Glam rocker Nick Gilder had the number 1 song in the US with "Hot Child in the City". It would prove to be his only hit record in America, although he had previously enjoyed a #1 smash in Canada with "Roxy Roller" while a member of the band Sweeney Todd.

2012 -

Former Pop star Gary Glitter, whose real name is Paul Gadd, was held in custody at a London police station for ten hours as he was quizzed by officers probing the sex abuse scandal sparked by late British TV entertainer Sir Jimmy Savile. From the early '70s until the mid-1980s, Glitter placed 18 songs in the UK Top 40.

Conrad Murray, the 60-year-old doctor convicted of causing Michael Jackson's death, was released from jail after serving nearly two years of a four-year sentence.

The Allman Brothers Band played what they said would be their final show ever, at New York's Beacon Theatre, ending their forty-five year career.

Phil Collins announced in an interview with Andy Greene of Rolling Stone that he was ending his retirement and was plotting a new album backed by another tour.

Rod Stewart appeared on The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon where he performed a song called "Please", from his latest album, "Another Country".

Elvis Presley's latest album, "The Wonder Of You", set a new record for the artist with the most number one albums in the UK when it became the singer's 13th LP to top the chart. Previously Elvis and Madonna were tied with 12 number one albums each.

2020 -

The late Tom Petty returned to the number one spot on Billboard's Top Rock Albums chart after his second solo LP, "Wildflowers" was reissued. Originally released in 1994, it sold over 44,000 units after being re-released two weeks earlier.

Whitney Houston posthumously became the first Black artist to have three albums certified Diamond in America. Her 1987 LP, "Whitney" joined her self-titled debut and 1992's "The Bodyguard" soundtrack in surpassing the equivalent of 10 million U.S. sales.

2022 -

Jerry Lee Lewis, the legendary Rock 'n' Roll pioneer, passed away at the age of 87. After a string of six Billboard Top 40 hits, which included "Whole Lot Of Shakin' Going On" (#3), "Great Balls Of Fire" (#2) and "Breathless" (#7), he also enjoyed a long streak of Country And Western hits. In 1986, along with Elvis and Chuck Berry, he made the inaugural class of inductees for the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and joined the Country Hall of Fame in 2022.
