Rock pioneer Big Joe Turner died of kidney failure at the age of 74. Turner was one of the first artists to ever play Rock and Roll when he recorded "Shake, Rattle and Roll" in 1954, although Bill Haley And His Comets had a bigger hit with their cover version. Turner also recorded "Sweet Sixteen" before B.B. King, and wrote "Honey Hush", later copied by Jerry Lee Lewis and Paul McCartney. Turner earned his nickname from his 6'2", 300 lbs stature.
